St James CofE Primary and Nursery School

School Vision, Ethos and Aims

Our vision, ethos and aims are at the core of everything we do. They underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils as confident, happy citizens.

Vision

Our vision is to offer a highly distinctive, innovative and inclusive primary academy that provides a focus on educational excellence, outdoor education, an extended school day and a distinctive Christian ethos.

Characteristics

The school is characterised by:

  • A desire to serve a new developing community by being open, inclusive, welcoming and nurturing to children of all faiths and world views;

  • A strong Christian ethos in which everything the school does is underpinned by the Christian values of educating for: wisdom, knowledge and skills, hope and aspiration, community and life together, and respect and dignity;

  • An ambitious, creative and challenging curriculum that makes the most of the ‘great outdoors’ especially the rugged beauty of Dartmoor;

  • A unique focus on the development of pupil’s character, self-discipline and resilience enabling the pupils’ confidence and skills to flourish both in school and through our extended provision;

  • A strong focus on environmental responsibility and education.

Our Ethos

A Christian ethos is at the heart of our school community but we embrace and learn from other religions, cultures and beliefs.

Our Aims

We aim for our children:

  • To be happy, self-confident and resilient;
  • To become responsible, mindful, caring and active members of the community and the wider world;
  • To be able to think and learn independently and develop a love of learning;
  • To feel included and be supported to flourish as unique individuals;
  • To be equipped with the learning and life skills needed to keep themselves safe and well prepared for the future and able to positively contribute to society.

The school pursues the highest standards of achievement and personal development within a climate that values the unique talents of everyone associated with the school. We promote a caring approach to teaching, encouraging good behaviour and developing a sense of right and wrong. Above all, we seek to recognise the special gifts of each individual.

Our values

We aim to ensure that our Christian and British values are seen in action in everything we do. As a school, we are now working with parents, children and wider stakeholders  to identify and agree our shared values.

We foster the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all children within a Christian environment and nurture our links with our local communities including churches.

Our ethos, vision, aims and values are central to our ‘every day working’ and are reflected in everything we do.
