Our Wider Curriculum Offer and Educational Visits

St James provides a range of sports and clubs throughout the year for Keystage 1 and Keystage 2. Children are encouraged to be active and participate in activities inside school at lunchtimes and after school clubs and outside school through club links. The Sports Premium funding has enabled us to extend our provision.

Children in Y5 and 6 access swimming at Parklands.

Sports fixtures are arranged to encourage children's involvement in team competition. The school enters teams for inter-school tournaments, festivals and leagues. These event introduce children to competition at a higher level where they are competing and testing their skills.

Music

Music enriches our lives: it brings joy both as a listener and a participant; it can comfort and make us feel secure; it can challenge us and confront us. All human societies and ages engage with music. Rarely does a day go by without music influencing and affecting us.

At St James Primary School we strive to provide the best music education for all children. We are committed to developing excellence in both provision and outcomes. We want all our children to learn to be active participators in music and not just listeners.

Experiencing and learning music systematically provides many benefits to children. Research demonstrates that it can enhance learning in other areas of the curriculum.

Children across the school are offered the opportunity to have tuition in the following:
  • Trumpet

  • Trombone

  • Tuba

  • Rock-Steady

  • Drum-kit
  • Piano

Weekly lessons on instruments are given by visiting tutors, all of whom are professional musicians who both teach and perform. Lessons are given either individually or in small groups, generally lasting half an hour. The lessons take place during the school day.

Cooking

At St James, we believe that all children should be given basic life skills. Cooking is a key part within our curriculum and children are taught basic skills.

First Aid

We believe basic First Aid is an essential skill for our children to have. We actively seek opportunities for children to have a range of skills that support them to contribute to society in a positive way.

Forest School

Across the school children have the opportunity to go to our on-site Forest School as part of lunchtime provision..

Forest School is a child-centred inspirational learning process, that offers opportunities for holistic growth through regular sessions. It supports play, exploration and supported risk taking. It develops confidence and self-esteem through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting.

Learning Beyond the Classroom: Offsite Trips

At our school, we believe that meaningful learning doesn’t only happen within the classroom walls. Offsite trips play a vital role in enriching our curriculum, sparking curiosity, and helping pupils connect their learning to the wider world. Whether it’s a visit to a museum, a nature reserve, or a cultural landmark, these experiences deepen understanding, build confidence, and create lasting memories.

To ensure all trips are safe, well-organised, and educationally purposeful, we use Evolve, an online platform that supports the planning, approval, and management of educational visits. This system helps us maintain high standards of safeguarding and risk assessment while enabling staff to focus on delivering inspiring experiences.

Our commitment to learning beyond the classroom is led by Headteacher: Maria Hazlewood and coordinated by our Educational Visits Coordinator (EVC): Gabby Stevens, who oversees the planning and quality assurance of all offsite activities.
