St James CofE Primary and Nursery School

Our Structure

Historic Context

Under government policy in 2018, all new schools were established as free schools via the government free schools programme. The term "free schools" simply meant that they are free of local authority control.  Within the free schools programme, there was a route called the free school presumption process whereby local authorities could invite proposals for schools in areas of basic need. Basic need meant new places are required due to local demand.  Proposers for these schools were required to be approved sponsors by the Department for Education prior to submitting the proposal.

St James Church of England Primary and Nursery School was established under the free school presumption process.  The school was sponsored by DfE approved sponsor, the Diocese of Exeter, via the Exeter Diocesan Education Network (EDEN).  To comply with DfE requirements and to operate the school, EDEN established the new St James Academy Trust. This was a company limited by guarantee.
