St James CofE Primary and Nursery School

Thursday 21st January

Recapping spelling rules:

- The /n/ sound spelt ‘kn’ and (less often) ‘gn’ at the beginning of words
- The sound /dʒ/ spelt ‘-ge’ and ‘-dge’ at the end of words, and sometimes spelt as ‘g’ elsewhere in words before ‘e’, ‘i’ and ‘y’.
- The /s/ sound spelt ‘c’ before ‘e’, ‘i’ and ‘y’

Label different parts of your room with each grapheme that we’ve looked at this week:

Dge, ge, kn, gn, c

Watch the phonics input video. I will read a word for the children and show them a word, they have to run to the part of the room that has the right grapheme.

After that, complete the phonics story. Can they find different words that contain the different spelling rules. (I’ve asked them to spot any past tense verbs ending with tricky ‘ed’ too)

There is a copy with the answers shown, please don't reveal this to the children until they have completed the activity themselves.
